Conference Outline
1. About the symposium
Reputation of a country or region is based on the beliefs and opinions that are generally held about its long-term design and cultural activities. The capacity to design determines the overall impression and comprehension of a country’s soft power and its right to speak. The greater a country’s or region’s design innovation capabilities, the greater its cultural soft power and external reputation.
The Chinese government has said unequivocally that one of its strategic goals is to create “a country with a thriving culture,” characterized by increased civic development, civility, and national soft power. When it comes to building the national soft power, design encompasses much more than packaging, marketing, and supporting culture. It should be seen as a culture-development strategy and implemented accordingly.
“Reputation and Cultural Value in Design Soft Power” will be the focus of this international symposium. We’ll look at how design innovation can be used to promote cultural soft power, identify its core value, meaning, structure, and importance in practice, consider how Chinese cultural soft power can be better represented, understood and spread around the world through design innovation, and make recommendations for China design as a global strategy.
From an interdisciplinary perspective, scholars and professionals in the fields of design and culture from home and abroad will discuss design’s soft power in cultural endowment, transformation, solidarity, and competitive edge, as well as cross-cultural dialogue and national reputation. We hope to recreate the design knowledge graph and make effective use of design to achieve sustainable growth.
